GRIDThe 8.4m x 8.4m base grid is optimal for parking and structural organization while a half module of 4.2m x 4.2m is ideal for room planning. This results in the 4.2m stripes that run across the site.
STRUCTUREBuilding profiles conform to the 8.4m structural module. Bends in the stripes are placed at module lines.
VIEWFrom the city, the Hualien development looks like an urban park, but from areas of nature (the ocean and the mountains), the buildings blend in with the natural surroundings.
PUBLIC PATHOutside paths can cross through the valleys, between the peaks. These areas are public spaces and can be planted with lush gardens.
SUN PATHThe east-west stripes are effective in blocking out early morning and late evening glare from the low lying sun. Simultaneously, this same pattern allows for abundant sunlight in the winter while blocking out extraneous solar gain in the summer.
VENTILATIONInterior circulation follows the buildings’ geometry, and ventilation occurs in the highest parts of the building, the peaks.
